Celebration of the Olympics

Celebration of the Olympics

The Rotary Club of Frome has revealed that they intend to hold a Half Marathon and 10k race to celebrate the Olympic year.

The Chairman of the committee who will organise the event, Richard Dredge, said, "Humphrey Barnes will become President in 2012 and he asked us all in the club to think of a way we could celebrate this wonderful event and the Frome Half Marathon really does seem very appropriate".

The Rotary Club have joined forces with the Frome Running Club who have a very strong membership and will be a major asset in ensuring that the organisation meets the needs of the runners.

The event will be staged in Frome on Sunday the 22nd July 2012 with the start and finish being at the Frome Town Football Club. Both races will start together and go through the centre of the town.

Richard went on to say "the event will not only be a day for club runners to meet the challenge of the hills of Frome but we also want as many people from Frome and the surrounding area to treat this as a fun day and run in either race for our nominated charity which will be The Critchill Special Needs School and Harry's Hydro."

The committee has already made good progress in establishing permission from all necessary parties for the event to be held, and a dedicated web site will soon be launched for any interested runners to obtain all the relevant details concerning the day.

The committee have not forgotten the youth and children of the town, who if under 16 will not be eligible to run in the event. The running club will hold a competition for all ages at Selwood School during the day. Georgie Starkie, the chair of the running club, said "It should be a great day for Frome and the running club; we currently have over 80 members and will be launching a junior athletics section in September 2012. We hope any aspiring junior athlete will come along and give some of the events a try on the day".

The Event is being fully backed by the Town Council and Vernon Anderson, the Chief Executive, has played a major role in ensuring this can be staged. He said "This will be a great day for Frome and I hope that the whole community will support what the Rotary Club is doing to celebrate the Olympics. The town can only be the winner if we all support their efforts".

The committee will ensure that the event is well publicised throughout the town and the route will appear on the forthcoming web site as well as in the Somerset Standard and Frome Times.

If any individual, club or Business wishes to help in the organisation or sponsorship of the event please contact one of the names stated below. If anyone who does not have access to the web site requires information about the day, then please contact Richard Dredge on 01373 467145 or Dot Cretney on 01373 463904.
