In February 1942 a week of fundraising for the war effort took place in Frome and the surrounding area with a target of £175,000. This was not only achieved but surpassed, when you consider a two course meal including a cup of tea cost just a shilling (5p) it helps to put the achievement into prospective.
The whole community was involved from schools and organisations to businesses and individual donations, the effort was amazing. Leading the effort were the then Frome Urban Council and Frome Rural and District Council with the Somerset Standard advertising the programme of events and reporting on the activities.
During the week the town adopted HMS/M Thunderbolt, a T class submarine, the story of that particular submarine is unique. There are details of the adoption of Thunderbolt in the foyer of the Memorial Theatre.
There will be a presentation on the Thunderbolt by Dom Young commencing at 3pm on Sunday 26th February in the Memorial Theatre to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the event and the week of fundraising arranged by the Frome branch of the Royal Naval Association(RNA).
There will be an exhibition afterwards in the Assembly Rooms covering the fundraising effort of Frome by the Frome Museum and Frome Rotary Club plus displays by the various service organisations in Frome. Sea cadets from TS Achilles will be in attendence with a demonstration of naval piping and refreshments will be available and there will be a collection for TS Achilles.
The RNA would like to thank the Trustees and Volunteers of the Frome Memorial Theatre for their support in staging this event.
