Frome Town Council is calling for volunteers in order to help residents clear snow in their local area.
A spokeswoman for the Town Council said, "We don't know when the weather might turn nasty and snow will become the hot topic. Last winter Frome Town Council supplied additional grit bins in and around the town, however grit won't make much difference if there is a heavy covering of snow, the only way to clear the roads is to get stuck in with a shovel."
Somerset County Council will clear and salt the priority networks, which leaves many of the connecting roads and pathways blocked with people unable to get to the main roads.
Inspired by Frome resident Les Stather, Frome Town Council has set up Snow Patrol which is a group of volunteers willing to help out with clearing snow and gritting areas not covered by the County Council.
Each area will have a nominated co-ordinator holding a list of contacts and will be responsible for making the decision to call in the volunteers. If you are unable to clear snow yourself and need the help of Snow Patrol, please call 07554 878308.
The spokeswoman from the Town Council said, "There is no law stopping you from clearing snow and ice on the pavement near your home so long as you use your common sense and take reasonable care to see that you do not create a new and worse hazard."
If you would like to register as a volunteer or would like some more information, please contact the Town Council on 01373 465757 or visit our Winter Services page.
